15 Restaurant Website Defects Costing You Reservations

We scanned 200+ restaurant websites across the US, Mexico, and Central America. Here's what we found — and what it's costing you.

35%
of restaurant websites had critical errors — broken pages, expired SSL, or forms that don't work

Every broken form, missing title tag, and slow-loading page is a customer who gives up and goes somewhere else. We know because we scanned them — and then we reached out to tell them.

Here are the 15 most common defects we found, ranked by how much revenue they're likely costing you.

#1

Broken Contact & Reservation Forms

Found in 22% of sites · Est. 3-8 lost reservations/week

The #1 revenue killer. Forms with no action URL, missing submit buttons, or that silently fail. Customers fill out their info, click submit, and nothing happens. They assume you got it. You didn't. That's a lost reservation that thinks they're confirmed.

#2

Missing Title Tags

Found in 18% of sites · Est. 15-30% drop in Google traffic

Your <title> tag is what Google shows in search results. If it's missing or generic ("Home" or "Untitled"), you're invisible. A restaurant called "Cúrate" with no title tag shows up as "Untitled" in Google. Nobody searches for "Untitled restaurant."

#3

No Meta Description

Found in 40% of sites · Est. 5-10% lower click-through from search

Google writes its own description when you don't provide one — and it's usually bad. "Welcome to our restaurant. We serve food." is not compelling. A good meta description is a 155-character ad that doubles your click-through rate.

#4

Expired or Misconfigured SSL Certificates

Found in 12% of sites · Est. 30-60% visitor drop-off

When Chrome shows "Your connection is not private," 70% of people leave immediately. It doesn't matter that your restaurant doesn't collect payment info — visitors see the warning and bounce. We found multiple Michelin-starred restaurants with expired SSL.

#5

Broken Internal Links

Found in 15% of sites · Hurts SEO + confuses visitors

Links to your menu, hours, or reservation page that return 404 errors. Every broken link is a dead end. For a restaurant, this means customers can't find your hours, your location, or your menu — the three things they came for.

#6

Website Completely Down

Found in 7% of sites · Est. 100% reservation loss while down

Over 1 in 15 restaurant websites we scanned were completely offline. Domain expired, hosting lapsed, or server error. These are restaurants that are open and serving customers — their website just doesn't exist anymore. Nobody can find them.

#7

Missing Content-Security-Policy Header

Found in 85% of sites · Risk of injected scripts

CSP prevents malicious scripts from loading on your site. Without it, you're vulnerable to credit card skimming, ad injection, and data theft. This is especially critical if you accept online payments or have a reservation form.

#8

No Mobile Viewport Meta Tag

Found in 8% of sites · Est. 50-70% mobile visitors see broken layout

Over 60% of restaurant searches happen on mobile. If your site doesn't have viewport set, it renders as a tiny desktop page on phones — impossible to read, impossible to navigate, impossible to make a reservation.

#9

Missing Open Graph / Social Sharing Tags

Found in 65% of sites · Est. 30-50% lower social media click-through

When someone shares your restaurant on Instagram, Facebook, or iMessage, what shows up? If you don't have OG tags, it's a blank card or — worse — a random image from your page. OG tags control your social first impression.

#10

No Structured Data (Schema.org)

Found in 70% of sites · Missing rich snippets in Google results

Restaurant schema tells Google your hours, cuisine, price range, and location. Without it, you're a plain blue link in search results. With it, you get stars, hours, and a map — which doubles click-through rate.

#11

Slow Page Load (3+ Seconds)

Found in 35% of sites · Est. 53% mobile visitors leave

Google's own data: 53% of mobile visits are abandoned if a page takes longer than 3 seconds to load. Restaurant sites are notorious for giant hero images, unoptimized photos, and render-blocking scripts. Every second of load time costs you customers.

#12

Missing Hreflang for Bilingual Menus

Found in 90% of bilingual sites · Google shows wrong language version

If your restaurant serves tourists (Mexico, Belize, Caribbean), you probably have an English and Spanish menu. Without hreflang tags, Google picks one language and ignores the other. Half your potential visitors never see the version they need.

#13

Broken External Links

Found in 25% of sites · Hurts credibility + SEO

Links to your Instagram, reservation platform, or review sites that point to dead pages. It makes your site look abandoned — and Google penalizes sites with high broken-link ratios.

#14

No Favicon or Brand Icon

Found in 30% of sites · Lower trust, lower memorability

The tiny icon in browser tabs. Missing = default browser icon = looks unprofessional. It's a 5-minute fix that makes your site feel finished.

#15

Missing Accessibility (alt text, ARIA, contrast)

Found in 80% of sites · Legal risk + lost 15-20% of customers

ADA lawsuits against restaurants with inaccessible websites are rising fast. Missing alt text on menu images, poor color contrast, and no keyboard navigation exclude customers — and invite legal trouble.

87
average website score out of 100 across all restaurants we scanned

The average restaurant website scores 87/100 on our scanner. That sounds decent — until you realize the average includes sites with broken forms, missing titles, and no mobile optimization. An 87 means you're passing by default, not excelling.

The restaurants scoring 50-70 are the ones losing the most revenue. A site that's completely down? That's zero reservations. A site with broken forms? That's confirmed reservations you never receive.

What You Should Do Right Now

1. Check your website. Load it on your phone. Fill out your own contact form. Click every link. If something doesn't work, your customers already noticed.

2. Get a free scan. We'll run your site through our scanner and send you a detailed report — specific issues, specific lines, specific fixes. No charge, no catch. Start here.

3. Fix the critical stuff first. Broken forms and missing title tags cost you the most. Security headers and structured data are the fastest wins for SEO.

The Bottom Line

Your website is your front door. If it's broken, you're turning away customers who were already interested enough to find you online. That's not a marketing problem — it's a maintenance problem. And maintenance is cheap.
